UCLA Student Care Manager's Role in Assisting Students
The Student Care Managers’ positions at UCLA were created to assist in providing early intervention for distressed or disruptive students. Each student’s situation is unique, so it can be difficult to determine how serious a situation might be and which referrals might be helpful. Talking with a Student Care Manager is a good place to start. Karen Minero and Mark Veldkamp are available to consult with students, faculty, teaching assistants, families and staff to determine a helpful approach or course of action. Please know that you are never alone in dealing with these situations. The Student Care Managers meet weekly with the UCLA Consultation & Response Team and coordinate the work of the team. They are also available to provide trainings for campus departments regarding how to respond when a student is distressed or disruptive.
Please feel free to contact Karen Minero by calling 310-825-0628 or Mark Veldkamp at 310-825-7291 (Mark can provide support and advocacy for survivors of sexual assault, dating/domestic violence and stalking as well). You can reach both Student Care Managers by emailing CRTeam@ucla.edu. However, keep in mind that the Student Care Managers do not maintain 24 hour access to email and phone.
****If you need an immediate response after hours or on weekends please call UCLA Counseling and Psychological Services 24 hr access line (310)825-0768 or call UCPD 24 hr dispatch line at (310)825-1491 or dial ‘911 for your local police. Here is a link to additional emergency phone numbers.
